Do you have water damage? Do’s and Dont’s

Here are some helpful Do’s and Don’t’s for water damage in your home or office. But first, call your local remediation company. SaniCare has provided remediation services in Albuquerque and surrounding areas for over 30 Years.

What TO do:

  • Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.
  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and tabletop items.
  • Remove and prop wet upholstery and cushions.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Turning air conditioning on for maximum drying in summer,
  • Remove colored rugs from wet carpeting.
  • Remove art objects to a safe, dry place.
  • Gather loose items from floors.

What NOT to do:

  • Don’t leave wet fabrics in place. Hang furs and leather goods.
  • Don’t leave books, magazines, or other colored items on wet carpets or floors.
  • Don’t use your household vacuum to remove water.
  • Don’t use the television or other household appliances.
  • Don’t turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet, and keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging.

Mold Precautions:

  • Remember, mold thrives best in areas that are dark and humid, have a moisture source and feed upon organic food sources, (wood, drywall, etc.).
  • Don’t attempt to clean with bleach or other household products.
  • Don’t disturb the visible mold.
  • Don’t allow children, older adults, and persons with respiratory conditions in the area.
  • Don’t assume that only what you can see is the problem – mold can thrive in hidden areas such as wall cavities, cabinets, closets, and crawl spaces.
