The Aesthetic Benefits of Brick
Design: Brick floors feel warm, comforting, and inviting. These characteristics come from the fact that it is a very familiar, natural feeling material. Brick has been used in construction for centuries. It is an alternative to stone, giving a space many of the benefits of personality and durability, while maintaining a sense of welcoming wonder.
Options: There are numerous design options available for brick floors. The material itself comes in various sizes, shapes, and can be stained or painted a myriad of colors. These pieces can then be arranged in unique, specific patterns and designs which can be quite intricate.
Texture: In it’s natural state brick has a rough feel to it that provides an inherent traction, even when wet. However, if a wax finish is applied the material will lose most of those characteristics.
Warmth: Unlike stone, which can get quite cold in the winter, brick tends to maintain a steady, moderate temperature. This can be combined with a below surface radiant heating systems to create a floor which almost glows with heat.
Regular Cleaning Maintenance: The floor should be mopped, swept, or vacuumed on a regular basis to keep it free of small pieces of dirt and debris. These tiny grains can act like sandpaper on a brick floor over time, and so need to be removed to maintain the integrity of the seal, and the floor itself.

Brick Floors Need to be Sealed: Brick in it’s natural state is quite porous and will need to be sealed in order to protect it from liquid staining and penetration. In some cases brick will come prefinished with a powerful commercial sealer applied to the entire paver. If not, the floor will need to be coated with a sealing agent immediately after installation and before use.
Sealing Brick Floors: Brick grout and mortar installations can receive a variety of finish sealers, acrylic, linseed oil, polyurethane, epoxy or a penetrating sealer. Each sealer has its own distinctive look, durability and difficulty to remove and recoat.
Topical Sealers: Topical Sealers can provide visual enhancement as well as topical protection from stains and chemicals. They require a dry, clean surface during application to gain adhesion. Topical sealers may alter the coefficient of friction which can make substrates slick when wet – a condition that can be remedied by adding anti-skid materials. Life span is generally 1-5 years, although high-end epoxy/urethane systems can last significantly longer.
Penetrating Sealers: Penetrating sealers can be applied to dry or damp surfaces and should be properly matched with substrate porosity in order to effectively penetrate the surface and react. The chemical reaction bonds active ingredients within the substrate blocking surface moisture. Penetrating sealers generally do not significantly modify substrate appearance or traction. Lifespan is generally 5 years or more.
Stripping Brick Floors: Stripping brick floors can be challenging. You need proper equipment, understand how to identify different sealers and how to remove them, as well as, the potential to damage to furnishings and your health without training and experience.
SaniCare, can help whether it be a solvent based sealer or water based sealer. We can remove them both and give you information about the pros and cons of each sealer. We can also re-sand and grout joints that have failed.
